Canoeing in the News

Canoeing continues to be most popular watersport and regularly features in the media.

Here are just some of the examples that show how popular and beneficial the sport is.  There are a huge number of examples (too many to put here) of where canoeing has helped develop youngsters, been used to raise money for charity, or as an emotional and physical challenge to name but a few.

The popularity is also evident in the steady and consistent growth in the British Canoe Union’s membership figures, which are increasing at 9% per year. Whilst participation is going up, membership is increasing at an even faster pace, indicating that more and more people recognise the benefits the sport… so now we need more access.

A sporting chance for every child

Gordon Brown has set out proposals to put competitive sports back at the top of the agenda in Bradford schools.

Sport England, through lottery funding, has invested in better changing rooms and pitches, more coaches and more volunteers for sports clubs such as the Ben Rhydding Hockey Club, Bradford and Bingley Canoe Club and Bradford Hockey Club, followed by a multi-million-pound investment programme to boost existing clubs.

So come on Mr Prime Minister... Access to our Inalnd Waters is needed too... This will mean that a variety of sports can be undertaken and a child will find the one that suits them .. not everyone likes  the "traditional" sports undertaken in school.

SCHOOL IS BACK IN ACTION - AFTER A GAP OF 12 YEARS

After being shut for more than 12 years, the doors of Mancetter's old church school opened to pupils again ewcwnrly.

Restored to its former glory, the 19th century building in Church Walk is now up and running as Wathen Grange - an independent school for 11 to 16-year-olds.

With an emphasis on practical skills, staff at the school aim to teach within the framework of the national curriculum, through a thematic approach, according to Chris Nock, its head of education services.

For example, challenges will be set for pupils to see how far they can cycle and canoe

Partially-sighted canoe winner takes trophy

Partially sighted paddler Alexis Gohar picked up a special award for displaying courage and fortitude in the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon.

 
A woman diagnosed with bone marrow cancer has raised £800 by completing a four-mile kayak paddle to raise awareness about the disease.

Stars back New Princes Trust Fund-raising drive

Three hundred people will trek, run, cycle and kayak across Somerset and Devon.  There is also a Palace to Palace bike ride from Buckingham Palace to Windsor Castle on September 16.

Canoeing in the News...

Pushing the boat out for canoe club  EXPERIENCED canoeists and other volunteers are being invited to a public meeting at Morpeth arranged to launch a new canoe club.

Castle Morpeth Borough Council's sports development team has already applied for Lottery Awards For All cash to fund new equipment and hopes to launch the club next Easter.
